Tech Tips – Residential IHT (w/ External Expansion Tank) Oil Maintenance

Oil Maintenance Procedures for Residential IHT units with External Expansion Tank

Designed to be trouble-free

Normally the Residential IHT (K46), which is featured in many tractor & rider models, does not require any servicing for the life of the vehicle. However, if there is a desire to check or replace oil, it may be necessary to remove the transaxle from the vehicle to access the black cap located under the pulley and fan. Due to the design of our units.

Maintenance Overview

First, remove the transaxle from the vehicle following OEM instructions. After placing the transaxle on a bench surface remove the fan & pulley and pry open the black cap and remove magnet (see Fig #1). Invert transaxle to allow the oil to drain from case through the port under the black cap.

Tuff Torq K46 Oil Maintenance – Figure 1

Refill transmission case with oil through same port to near top of the case. Tuff Torq® recommends refilling transmission with Tuff Torq® hydrostatic oil, available from our service and aftermarket department.

Reinstall magnet & cap. While reinstalling the fan & pulley on drive shaft be sure to place all components in the same order as they were removed.

In heavy usage applications, oil changing is recommended after the 1st 50 hours of operation and every 200 hours, thereafter. The filter should never require changing unless the transaxle is removed from the tractor or rider and opened for repairs.

Finally, after purging the transaxle of air, add additional oil through tank opening (under vent valve) to the recommended oil level. (see Figure #2 below for recommended oil level).

Hello dear Graham, I am Jalal from Iran, I am a mechanic. What kind of oil should I use?

  • Randy says:

Just purchased a k46bn. Does it come with oil in it? And if so how do I purge it?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Yes it does come with oil. to purge please follow these steps>
      Check oil level.
Place vehicle’s drive axle on jack stands with wheels off floor.
Start engine and operate at low idle speed.
Depress and hold the forward pedal and open and close the bypass (tow) valve a few times. Next do the same for reverse. This only takes a couple of seconds to do. Note the bypass is typically the rod that is located on the back of the tractor that you can pull out to free-wheel the unit. Also note that this may take a partner or some assistance.
Depress the forward and reverse pedal(s) in a back and forth type motion with the bypass valve in the run position.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the axles start to move. This should only take a couple of times.
When the axle starts to move, increase the engine speed.
Repeat depressing the forward and reverse pedal until transaxle gives full response.
Turn the engine off. Remove jack stands while placing vehicle’s wheels on floor.

  • Mike Hershsberger says:

I have a K46 AW in my Husqvarna that will not go up hills. I can get to and remove magnet and oil appears low. What weight oil do I need? Will it fix problem? do I nned to bleed air afterwards?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Best oil you can use is our Tuff Tech oil. it comes in a 3-liter bottle and has a part number of 187Q0899000.

  • Daniel Dees says:

What weight of hydrostatic oil Do I need for my K46B Tuff torque transaxel.

  • Dave Nault says:

I believe I have a k46 in my husqvarna xt48xls. I had lost ability to climb inclines so I drained and refilled the trans. Seems to work okay until it warms up and then barely moves up the slightest incline. In fact, if the wheels are turned it’ll barely push forward. Any suggestions? Perhaps a heavier weight oil is needed?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It could be that the center case is scored. You should inspect the center case to see if it is damaged. if so then at that point it is rebuild or replace.

  • Domenico Pugliese says:

Hello, thank you for comment -369602
One last question: if I remove the lower case, would it be able to remove the lost magnet? Or do I need to disassemble the entire unit to find it?
    Thank you very very much!

  • Domenico Pugliese says:

Hello, while repositioning the magnet in my Tuff Torq K46, it fell down and into the case below. No way to fish it out.
What are the risks of running the unit with the magnet inside?
Thank you for your kind reply

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
If the magnet is in there it can shift position and get caught on internal parts. In the gear chamber it can end up sticking to the gears and it could get run between two gears and that can crack the case. In the Hydro chamber it can get stuck to one of the parts and make it harder for the parts to rotate.

  • Jim says:

What type oil do you use in a k 46 from factory

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It depends on which K46 you have. All K46s are built specifically for the tractor that they are installed in to the OEM specifications.

  • mario belanger says:

cannot drive on slight incline??? no problem on flat
I purged it but nothing, what should I do?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would suggest an oil change. in the process of doing that you can check everything externally to see if there is an issue. For example, something keeping the control lever from moving as far as it can or a roll pin backing out of the control lever that would also make the control lever not move as far. check the brake linkages to ensure it is not slightly engaged which can affect the power. After an oil change you can test it to see how well it does now.

  • Peter Rickard says:

I have a John Deere LT180. Cannot drive up slight inclines. No Power. OK on the flat. Do you know who supplies the K46 transmission in Australia.

  • Paul Provost says:

My k46cc has no power on inclines . But is fine on flat ground. My John deere has 500 hours on it . Is there anything that can be done?
    Thanks

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The best advice I can give is to change the oil in the transaxle. That is the best way to check all the external parts of the transaxle like the control lever and the control lever roll pins, tractor linkages, belt fitness, and all pulleys on the tractor. Fresh oil can make a big difference.

  • Tim says:

I have a 2008 Husqvarna with 1076 hours on it.. It has a Tuff Tork K46 BT in it… which has never been removed or serviced.. after 15 years & 1000 hrs… just now starting to hesitate & slip.. especially in reverse.. The oil is about 1” below the full mark… My question is … (with this many hours) can I just add new oil or do I need to open it up and replace the filter too?? The oil was very dark… almost black!!

  • kim richardson says:

my neighbor gave me 2 husqvarnas – lgt-2554 and a lgt2654, both have been setting for 4 to 5 years. got the lgt 2554 running great, the lgt2654 was drop off a truck and broke the axle shaft. is the tuff torq k46 worth rebiulding? or part out the lgt-2654, how much oil does the k46 take and what weight oil is in the tuff torq k46?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It could very well be a good choice for repair. However, the extent of the damage of the “drop” should be assessed. It could be that the case is damaged as well or there could be broken levers. Once you have assessed the extent of the damage you can see if it is worth fixing. The LGT2654 has 2 different transaxles installed so you will need to know which one you have and that can be known through the serial number on the barcode sticker that is on the case of the transaxle close to one of the axles. Normally you can see it from the rear of the tractor. If you order the axle shaft kit for the K46 in the LGT2654 it has our tuff tech oil in it and that is the best oil you can use. it holds 2.4 quarts.

  • Robert says:

I have a John Deere X304 with a Kanzaki K46 transmission. Its making a oud grinder or screeching sound after it warms up after mowing the lawn. Its a 2 hour mow job.. Also I’ve overheated the trans while aerating the lawn a while back and tractor doesn’t seem a fast as it used to be. How much oil does the trans take and what is the oil change procedure. Do you folks sell the oil and or oil change kit?

  • David says:

Hi I have a countax D18-50 . Problem is the power steering will only turn the wheels if you spin the steering wheel really rapidly then it will turn to full lock ok, same for both ways of steering . I have changed the trans oil and filter but no better. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It sounds like you have a problem with your charge pump.

      • ggraham says:

        Hello,
It seems that the logic is the same for those units, however, that is not the only difference. Typically swapping is fraught with issues and logic is the largest to overcome but there are others that can make it challenging to make it work. You are asking a transaxle to work in a tractor not designed to have it installed. Axle lengths and fan and pulley stack up not to mention the pulley height can require modifications for a unit to work.

  • Gabby says:

Loosing what looks like transmission oil from LHS of axle , just started and now is continuing, is there seals or something I can replace or where is it coming from

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Yes, the axle seals can be changed. you may want to remove the transaxle from the mower and clean it up rather well and then sit it on some cardboard and let it sit overnight to locate where the leak is coming from. Once you have an idea where the leak is you can fix it.

  • kim richardson says:

i removed the transaxle from a husqvarna yth24k48, question about being a k46 tuff torq axle. drain about 2 1/2 quart, bleed the air out, axle will spin, however, i can only add 68 oz. and i looked up the amount and it said 73 oz. the axle is top up with new oil, still have 6 oz. to go but the oil level is top out. is 68 oz. enough oil for the axle?

  • Frank Brown says:

We took in a Husqvarna LGT2554 that had no transmission response at all, and the previous history on it is murky at best. We changed the oil in the K46, and put the correct amount in. We now have power through the unit, but reverse and forward motion are backwards to the lever. My question is: Are there internal variations in these transmissions that can accept CW versus CCW input directions? Like I mentioned before, someone might have put a different transmission in the machine. Thanks

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
is it a foot control 2554 or a fender controlled 2554? because those tractors have different units installed in them. Also, look at the serial number of the transaxle which is found on a bar code sticker on the case close to one of the axles, and get the number following the S/N and that will tell me which unit is installed in the tractor.

  • Edward says:

I have a A646024380 s/n JDPP PN: AM131575 46V -0330729 is it fixable it will run for about 15 minutes the lose movement and hardly goes up small incline , let it set for 5 minutes then it will move again , change oil and clean magnet , don’t go into small part of transmission, just open it and clean the housing . Thanks what do I need to do to fix it

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
If everything is OK externally (linkages, belts, & pullies) then you would need to rebuild the unit or replace.

  • How do you purge the transaxle after refilling it

    • ggraham says:

It all depends on what unit you have. For most transaxles without a charge pump, you would need to put the rear on jack stands and then put the unit into forward and let it run till the axles move strongly and then do the same in reverse. If it has a charge pump, it is self evacuating and purging is not needed.

  • Mc says:

    Hello,
I have a tractor with a k46H. What recommended weight can be pulled on a trailer?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
To be safe and not damage your transaxle you must stay under the rated weight design for the tractor. You would need to take the driver’s weight into consideration and the weight of the load and trailer. if you are under the rating for the tractor then it is safe.

  • John Zygmunt says:

Hi, I have 220 hrs on my 2015 John Deere X300 with a k46 tuff torq trans, it started to whine so I replaced the fluid with Tuff Tech premium transaxle fluid . I turned the shaft to purge the air, had some bubbles. Installed the trans in the tractor and suspended the rear off the ground and ran tractor in forward and reverse, the wheels turned slow. When on the ground the wheels barely turn. Do you think air or something jarred loose with the fluid change. Thanks John

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would make sure that the linkages are all hooked up correctly. Also, check to see if the pivot points in the linkages are tight and do not have ane slack in them. check the status of the bypass or freewheeling lever to make sure it is not sitting half out. If all is well then you may want to revisit how much oil you installed in the unit.

I need a dealer from Europe who sends parts to Croatia.
    Thank you! Matthias

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The oil we recommend for your transaxle is our Tuff Tech oil and the part number is 187Q0899000 for a 3-liter bottle. The filter would only need to be changed only if you split the case and I would test the unit with an oil change first. That way if you change the oil and it gets better you now know it was oil viscosity that was the culprit. The Distributor in Italy, Demal, will be happy to aid you.

  • Andrew says:

Hi Tuff Torq, I have a K46C-0057102 with 590 hours that was functioning well. While fitting a new drive belt and pulleys to the mower, I also drained the transmission oil and refilled with John Deere HyGard. Since refilling the transmission and repeatedly undertaking the air purge process (out of the mower and installed on the mower) the best I can get is a creeping pace (but strong – will creep up hills) on the mower with just a small input of forward drive – if I further depress the forward drive pedal I lose all forward movement. I only get forward movement with minimal forward drive input. Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Many thanks.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Which Hyguard oil did you use? Have you done any troubleshooting? Check the pedal linkage to make sure it is connected correctly and the lever is OK would be first. Next check the fan and pulley and input shaft splines.

    Hello!
I have a transmisioin K46IA6460-24I62 with the symbol: 7A645024340. On the occasion of the mower renovation, I decided to change the oil. According to the instructions, the box should hold 2.3 liters of oil. I poured about 1.5 liters and the box is full … Is it possible that I missed a step when draining the oil? (when draining, the crate was turned upside down)

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The K46S is the type of K46 that only has 1.95 liters installed in them, not the internal reservoir units that have larger oil capacity. So 1.5 liters is only a little low.

  • Ian Dunn says:

Hi, can you advise if K46 can be purged before re installing in the mower ? Or advise how to top it up once reinstalled in mower, when accessing the black cap and magnet appears to be impossible? Regards Ian (Australia)

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
You can use a drill to run the pump shaft to purge the air. Make sure you move the control lever forward till the axles start to move strongly and then the same in reverse. Also, if you do not have a remote reservoir then if you fill the unit halfway up the magnet (to the widest point) under the black sealing cap, that is a good level and you will not need to recheck the oil level.

  • Ryan Potter says:

  • Peter Hill says:

    Hello I have a Husqvarna YTH2246TDR mower-K46 transmission
Its is 10 years old but only has 35 hours on it (was in storage for many years)
It has just started to loose forward and reverse motion when it gets hot after cutting for 45 plus minutes.
it has always had a slight pump cavitation noise when operating.
Belts, pulleys are all in excellent condition.
I am really disappointed that it should be having issues with such low hours.
    Any advice please?
    Thanks Peter.

    • Peter Hill says:

      Ggraham,
      Thanks for your response,
Fluid was milky – water contaminated.
Filter had a lot of congealed fluid in it as well, so flushed everything out and reassembled with new fluid.
Back to normal again with no cavitation noise even in the Australian heat.
Appreciate your response and assistance – well done Mate.
      Peter.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I believe the issue is that you have water inside your case. The transaxles are vented so that the heating and cooling while in storage will mean moisture is collecting on the inside and mixing with the oil. To fix this you should change the transaxle’s oil and see if that helps.

  • Mc says:

    Hello. For K46H (60mhr) better 5w50 or 5w50.
    Thank You

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The absolute best oil to use in a K46H would be our Tuff Tech oil. it is tested and approved for your Tuff Torq transaxle and it is designed to be the best you can get. You can order from the distributor below with the part number 187Q0899000. It comes in a 3-liter bottle so it is more than enough to fill the K46H.

Do zinc/phosphorus oils additives such as ZDDP Engine Oil Additive add any benefit for longevity?
Would adding such an additive hurt?
    Thank You,

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I do not have testing on that product to be able to give a definitive answer. However, most motor oils and motor oil additives are formulated to release their protective qualities at a high temperature. A temperature that a transaxle will never reach. So unless this is formulated to be usable at a lower temperature it would not be of any effect.

    Merci

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Inspect the IDS holes have they been machined and are they mirror-like shiny? If not then they have not been machined out and the IDS holes are solid at the bottom. It should be ready then to install the center case.

  • Hermann says:

Its funny. Tuff Torq says the k46 is a reliable transaxle. But everyone seems to have similar problems. No power can’t climb hills but yet we are expected to spend more money on repairs. I have a John Deere X300 that is 6 years old That has less than 150 hours and I can not use to cut lawn. It is realy a shame that we spend $3000 on such in inferior product and the only help is we are told to change fluid which does not help or we have to purchase a new trans axle which will only last a couple of years. Why don’t you improve your products to last longer and make them so we can change the oil easily.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I have had numerous calls from people with over 500 hours, 700 hours, and even calls with 1200 and above hours on a K46. If you look at the number of K46 transaxles out there in the field, you will see that with over 5 million of them, the issues are extremely low, given the volume of the units. A lot of customers have purchased tractors with a K46 installed that should have purchased a tractor with a larger more robust transaxle because of their application and expectations. Hauling large or heavy loads or mowing a steep bank or a ditch or mowing a large acreage or steep inclines over 15°. This is not the fault of the K46. It is a lack of understanding of how hydrostatic transaxles work and a lack of research on the owner’s part for which tractor is best suited to their application and their expectations.

I answer questions year-round on which transaxle is best suited for the application that the customer has. I enjoy those questions and do my utmost to give honest advice to people so they can be confident they are getting a tractor with a transaxle that they require for what they need it to do. I understand the purchase of a tractor is an expensive prospect for most people but that is why it is imperative to do your due diligence in finding the best tractor for what your needs and expectations are. If you want to haul loads with your tractor, then you want to look at getting a tractor with at least a K58 installed on the lowest end or a K66 or K72 would be more appropriate. If you are mowing inclines or ditches you will need to adjust to a K66 or K72 as they have a larger capacity of oil and can handle better the abuse of hills and large acreage. Plus, these units are easy to change the oil on, though, the K66 is a better choice for ease of oil change.

Changing the oil is an ideal step for longevity and since Tuff Torq builds the transaxles to the specifications set by the OEM’s. It is the OEM’s that determine whether the unit has drain bolts or not. Perhaps if you would direct your questions on the ease of an oil change to the OEM so that they can understand your issues and desires then maybe change their requirements for Tuff Torq. If you need any assistance do not hesitate to contact Tuff Torq at 866.572.3441 or send an email to customerservice@tufftorq.com.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It all depends on the transaxle you have but you should start by changing the oil in the unit and seeing if that helps the issue.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
that number is the part number of the lower case. It is not a unique identifier for a transaxle since it is on all the transaxles that use that case. I would need a number off of the bar code sticker to see which unit it is.

I can’t find any info on the CR model, do they take the Tuff Torq 5W50 187Q0899000 oil?
I can’t find this oil in Australia, will Mobil 1 5W-50 full synthetic be ok?
Is the filler plug p/n 168T2036300? (Husq 583348601)
    thanks

Thanks for your prompt reply, a number of things have changed my mind about repairing the current installed trans-axle one of them being NO DRAIN HOLES!
Is there anyway that you can x reference the TuffTorq part number and the JD part number to find an axle that has drain holes and preferably an Eternal Expansion Tank for a higher capacity of fluid, if you could check this out for me I would be so grateful.
    Cheers, Frank.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I am sorry but that is not possible. The reason is simply that the transaxles we make are built specifically for the tractors that they are installed in. There would not be another unit that would have the same configuration internally that you have in the K46 that will just drop in.

  • Frank Driver says:

    Hi Graham,
    My mower is a JD- L130 with KOHLER and 48inch deck bought new circa 2003 JDPP P/N AM131580 TuffTorq 7A646024390 S/N 46AC0147458
My questions are- What is the full K46 model number, is there a repair kit available and what was the original fluid/oil?
    Many Thanks for your time
    Cheers, Frank.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The model number is K46AC and the part number for a new transaxle is 7A646024390 and the repair kit part number is 1A646099591. Original fluid is a conventional 10W-30.

  • I have AM131580 S/N 46ACO167689 tough torque transmission, can i use 5w50 full synthetic or should i use J20C. My L120 JD stopped pulling so i checked linkage and belt and found all ok so i removed unit and took cover off and the filter was clogged. I inspected all internal parts for wear but didnt seeanything but very fine scratches. Your help is appreciated.

I have a 2006 john deere 115 automatic lawn tractor that has done 1000 hrs. The hydro drive is a k46 iag460-24163. The PN AM134582 the SN 40J-0067947 also has this number on the bar code TUFF TORQ 768T2024010, I have drained the transmission completely and want to refill it with new oil.
I cant get tuff tech oil, but I can get TURF GARD will that be ok to use or should i be looking at 5w50 considering the hours.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
YOu can also use the John Deere Oil J20C. I do not have any data on the Turf Gard, so I cannot say if it would work.

      • Henry Strydom says:

Thanks for your help. My problem is its only available in 20 liters at the moment they call it HY GARD (j20c) and from the jd website it looks like its for big tractors and equipment not that that is anything to go by. Is there no other alternative?

  • Mark Barber says:

My Husqvarna ride on mower has a Tuff Torque 426121 has limited and intermittent forward power (slows down to almost stop and then starts to move forward again and then speedup) but appears to work well in reverse. The machine has done 900 hrs so it getting pretty old. I have not checked the oil nor never serviced the transmission. Any suggestions on what might be the cause?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would start by changing the oil. Then you can check the linkages to make sure there is nothing bent broken and the pivot pints are tight.

  • Robert Crea says:

John Deere LA110 won’t go forward or reverse however if I put tractor rear end on jacks wheels turn but with no power. Could it just be low on Hydrostatic Fluid?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Yes, start with that. Also, check the linkages looking for any pivot points with too much slop making the control lever not traveling its full arc.

  • Jeff Livings says:

I have Countax fitted with gearbox p/n 7A646084280, the fwd/reverse input lever moves freely back and forth with no drive from the gearbox, could you indicate what the likely failure is? The tractor had started to struggle to go uphill and had been moving slower and slower.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
If the control lever does not cause the transaxle to move then inspect the input shaft and the pulley on top of the transaxle and make sure the splines are intact and the pulley is actually turning the input shaft. If it is then you will need to check the hubs to see if one of the keys is broken.

Checked fluid level by removing batter and removing cap. Fluid level was fine however magnet was heavily coated. If I press petal as hard as I can it will barely move and some grinding noise is present. Should I replace the transmission or would I be fine with the rebuild kit?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The grinding noise makes me wonder about the input shaft and the pulley. I would check those first.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
You would need to purchase the John Deere oil J20C from your local John Deere dealer.

      • Dennis Kirk says:

Thanks! Now I have a question as to how to find out which Transmission I have. The barcode is gone but do have the Serial Number of the X300. Anyway to find out which model of transmission I have from the model number, year and serial number? And from whom do I get it?

        • ggraham says:

          Hello,
Take the serial number of the tractor to a John Deere Dealer they can tell you the John Deere part number for the transaxle at the very least. I can cross that number so we will have an idea of what you have.

I’m wondering if I need to change oil ? It does not seem to slow down going up the hill but the whine is there. Any recommendations ? I bought the mower Sept 2018

    Thank you

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Changing the oil is a great first step in finding the issue with your tractor. In doing that you will need to remove the transmission from the tractor so you can check for debris keeping the control lever from moving and also inspect the belt and pulley for damage. Also, check the linkages for anything bent or broken as well. Pay particular attention to any pivot points because as they start to wear they will eat up some of the movement of the control lever and it will make it so internally that the unit will not have as much oil pressure to move it up inclines.

  • mike Honeychuck says:

      Hello,
Stuff will fall out! You really need to remove the transmission from the tractor to work on it.

I have a 51A and wondering what the oil level in the tranny is supposed to be I’ve done a full rebuild of gears, shaft, pulley and resealed the case with new oil filter and fresh by5W 50 oil ..what is the level supposed to be in the small port / fill area? Large fill area doesn’t have the magnet on a key 51A does it? Just a large spring that holds the filter and media between the gear case and the pump and motor area

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
You use the large fill port and please remove the bottom screen. Otherwise, the unit could airlock and not allow the full complement of oil to get in the transmission. There is not a magnet under the seal cap on the K51.

  • I have a Tuff Torq K46 axel no 5473964 . When we try to mow the grass it seems to slow down and then just quite. I have had this mower since 2016 with 1859 hours on . He told me to drain the oil and put in new AMS oil 100%synthetic trans fluid Sae 20W -50 .I’m going to change it now and see how it works the mach said I may get one more year out it . Was wondering how much a pump for mower would cost .

  • Mark Moravek says:

How do you purge the air?

    • ggraham says:

Air Purging Procedure for Hydrostatic Transmissions

How much oil should I put in. And what type will be the best.?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It depends on which K46 you have. There is a bar code sticker on the case of the transmission that you can normally see from the rear of the tractor and on it is a serial number that will tell us which one you have exactly.

  • daniel Wood says:

i have a viking t6 which has great power going forward but struggles in reverse. Any ideas

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would check to see if there is any debris that is keeping the linkage or the control lever from moving as it should. Also, check any pivot points in the linkage as if there is a bit of slop in the pivots that can eat up movement for the control lever. you can also check the control lever for an added shock absorber as they can sometimes go bad and not allow the control lever to move as it should as well. if all is well with the linkage and lever you may need to try an oil change to see if reverse is showing the age of the oil first. Oil viscosity can cause a low power in either direction or in both directions.

  • Owain says:

Hi, based in UK. have a 2002 Westwood t1800 with the K46 hydrostatic gearbox. all going well and absolutely no issues, until last mow when i noticed as i parked her back in the garage a patch of oil on the floor related to the rear axle. no power issues. up on jacks and the undersurface of the box is wet with oil, no obvious leak point. reservoir fitted under the seat is at a jaunty angle for some reason and is also wet with oil. was cutting across a lot of inclines and wonder if the oil has leaked from the reservoir due to severity of incline and poorly fitted cap; seem likely?
on a flat surface its tipped to the left by 30 degrees.
2nd question, what should the level be in the reservoir? full to brim? or room for expansion? tank is at a jaunty angle and not level as i said so somewhat difficult to tell residual volume.
3rd question, can i just top it up?
    thanks for any advice!

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Yes, it could very well be that it was tipped and some leaked out and it could be that as it heated up because it was being used a little hard the oil expanded a bit more than usual and some then leaked out. The level in the reservoir as well as the top of procedure would require the serial number of the transmission so that I know which transmission you have so that I can be sure I am giving you the correct information.

      • Owain says:

great, thanks. where will i find the serial number for the transmission? nil obvious!

        • ggraham says:

It is on the case of the transmission close to one of the axles and normally you can see it from the rear of the tractor.

Hey I was wondering what kind of fluid does the hydrostatic k46 take.

It’s not as noticeable on a flat, but soon climbing a slope becomes labored and eventually it won’t make the climb. After a cooling off period, it starts out fine again. No sign of belt slippage – it remains cool to the touch. What could be the cause?

What was the reason why a simple drain plug was never installed on your transmission? Thus allowing for a much easier way to preform a fluid change!

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Drain plugs would be specified by the OEM to be installed. All our transmissions are built to the specs of the OEM.

      • Ken T. says:

So it’s my understanding there is a 8mm drain plug kit that can be bought from TT I have a K46 model. And can plugs be installed without removing trans from tractor? Please provide links and instructions also!

        • ggraham says:

          Hello,
Adding drain bolts would be introducing a new way for the unit to leak and you are not saving any time since you still need to remove the transmission to fill it with oil. So, all in all, you are not saving time by adding drain bolts.

I have a E170, bought new May 2020. It can barely climb any slight hill. Tried to pull my dethatcher (40″) and it could barely pull that. Since new it’s a gutless mower, can barely pull it’s own weight around. Was hoping it needed to get broke in, but after 20 hours its still a turd. Is there something I can adjust or should check?

    • ggraham says:

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would start troubleshooting this by checking the external things on transmission and making sure there is no debris on the case that could be stopping the control lever from moving its full arc. Also, check the linkages and especially any pivot points that could be loose and thereby robbing movement of the control lever. you can also try changing the oil to see if it will help the power issues.

  • Michael Thees says:

I have a Husqavana LT 2654 when it gets hot I lose power climbing hills and comes to a stop, I have had it to 3 dealers . The first one said new transmission,(so we did) ,2nd said that the drive belt is glazed,(so replaced it) . Now the 3rd replaced belt filled transmission oil , still having the same issue ,he now says it could be a oil sending unit ! Please help before I put it out of it’s missery

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Let me understand you correctly, you replaced the transmission and the tractor is still not climbing hills? If that is the case then I would check all the linkages to the control lever. Especially the pivot points to see if there is some major slack in them that could be using up the movement of the control lever so it is not moving its full arc which in turn will mean that not as much oil will be pumping and thus a weak tractor.

Most likely transmission. What do you recommend in this. Remove it and change oil, buy a kit nad fix it or change it completely for new transmission.
It is K46 do you have upgrade for this kind of model or stick it with K46?
    Thank you.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I believe the first step is to change the oil and see if it gets better. Then if it does not you may want to think about a rebuild or replace.

  • Darryl Searle says:

Hi I have a john deer L100 can you recommend a kit for fitting a drain and fill plugs

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
we do not recommend adding drain bolts to a transmission that does not have them because it introduces a new leak point and it does not save any time because you still have to take out the transmission from the tractor to get the oil back in it.

hi. i have stripped my 46k transmission because i found the seal on the resivor was missing..it had a large amount of dirt and grass in it. because of this i stripped the unit down to give it a complete clean..all went well until i started the motor and tasted the transmission..found the direction pedals were reversed.
how do i correct this problem,i thought i had followed all the information, and no parts over..any assistance to remedy this fault would be appreciated.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
On the motor side of the hydraulic circuit, there is a wedge-shaped part called the motor housing and it holds the bearing for the motor cylinder block. That wedge-shaped part is the key to your issue because you have installed it upside down. If you flip the motor housing around the motor shaft 180° then the direction will be corrected.

  • LARRY THREATT says:

have a John Deere 960r tran. leaks from the top I think around fan is there a rubber seal there can it b replace

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Yes, you can change the input shaft seal though I would start with a few other places to look before that spot. It may be necessary to pull the transmission so you can clean it up and see where the oil is leaking from. Places to check are the sealing cap that covers a magnet, the control lever area, the bypass lever area, and the brake lever area. Also, check the connections to the oil reservoir.

  • Dan Tandy says:

We are in southern BC and do not get as cold as farther north does. The noise happens all the time, summer and winter. I let it run with the brake off for a couple of minutes to warm up the oil, it still does it but not quite as bad as when I first start it up. I also have a snowblower that I use on it with Chains and wheel weights on the rear tires with a counterweight on the rear. So I do use it in cold weather but the noise is not any worse once it warms up.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Then if it is whining and it is not seasonally related then I would think about changing the oil. Whining can be indicative of broken-down oil viscosity and new oil should fix that issue.

  • Dan Tandy says:

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would definitely start with an oil change. that way you can check all the external things that can make your transmission not work properly. like the linkages and the control lever, making sure they are not bet or broken and also make sure there is not any debris that would hinder the control lever moving its whole arc. Here is a link to the procedure for changing the oil>> https://tufftorq.ordertree.com/media/promo/TuffTorq/cc%20K46%20with%20Internal%20Reservoir.pdf
Here is the air purge procedure>>
AIR PURGING PROCEDURE FOR HYDROSTATIC TRANSMISSION
      1. Check oil level.
      2. Place vehicle’s drive axle on jack stands with wheels off floor.
      3. Start engine and operate at low idle speed.
      4. Repeat opening and closing bypass (tow) valve while alternately depressing
      forward and reverse pedal(s).
      5. When vehicle starts to move, increase engine speed.
      6. Repeat quick starts and panic stops until transaxle give full response.
      7. Remove jack stands while placing vehicle’s wheels on floor.

  • Robert Lemings says:

Hello, I have a Husqvarna YTH2348 with a K46xx transmission with over 700 hours. Mowing fine today, uphill and level. Had a few hard jerks, then stopped moving altogether, both forward and reverse. any thoughts?

    • ggraham says:

Yes, you need to inspect the transmission and see if the belt is still on the pulley. Also, look at the bracing for the transmission and make sure it has not come loose. Next, check the linkages and the levers to make sure there is nothing broken. then it is checking the hubs and the keys that sit in the slots of the axles to make sure they have not broken. After all the external things are checked you may have to remove the transmission from the tractor and open it up to see if there is an issue internally.

      • Robert Lemings says:

After several hours of studying your procedures I have reached the following conclusion: If I remove the transaxle, repair it and refill it, I have to install it in the tractor to do the air purge procedure, THEN remove the tranaxle again to top off the oil, then reinstall it. Is that correct?

        • ggraham says:

          Hello.
It does say that yes. However, if you put the oil level about halfway up the magnet under the sealing cap that is a good level and you would not need to check it after purging.

      • Robert Lemings says:

Belt is on, pulley and fan are turning, axle keys are in place, wheels turn freely one forward the other backward as they should, linkages are intact. Suspect a broken output gear. Transmission is whining much more than it ever did. When this happened, the disengage lever at the rear had worked itself out about halfway which makes me think that a poorly engaged gear broke. Are there internal parts available for these?

        • ggraham says:

Yes, there are which K46 do you have?

          • Robert Lemings says:

I’m about to give up and refill it – not finding anything mechanical, although I can’t see the input shaft bottom end, the bypass valve, or look inside the motor. With the unit on it’s back, I can turn the input shaft and the cylinder does not rotate – don’t know if it should or not. I’m afraid to completely disassemble because I can’t find parts for it – the only part I see on your web page is a new transaxle. Although nothing mechanical is evident, I find it difficult to believe that oil would suddenly go bad in the space of one minute – in other words, it was working and then it wasn’t in less than a minute.

          • ggraham says:

            Hello,
Here is the link to the transmission on the website. you have to order the repair kit (#201) to get all the hydraulic parts.

          • Robert Lemings says:

Darn – have to destroy the input shaft seal in order to remove the shaft.

          • Robert Lemings says:

Ok, found the clip UNDER the splined nut. Apparently, the nut and clip are there to support the pulley – shaft will not pull out with the nut and clip removed. I’m missing something – is the shaft attached internally?

          • ggraham says:

            Hello,
The shaft only comes out after you remove the snap ring under the seal.

          • Robert Lemings says:

Gears are all intact. Oil level was in spec and clear. I wanted to remove the input shaft and inspect that, but the repair procedure says to remove a clip but mine has a nut, no sign of a clip. Nut turns with the shaft. How to remove it and is it possible for it to be damaged on the lower end? What locally available oil (ie: motor oil) is suitable for refilling?

          • Robert Lemings says:

            7A646084181, SN 46BT0516111.
The only sign I see of leakage is around the vent cap.

          • ggraham says:

If you have oil leaking around the vent valve then the oil is getting so hot it is expanding out the valve. you could be low on oil and the oil viscosity is more than likely shot. I would advise an oil change and if you follow this link it will show you how to do it. https://tufftorq.ordertree.com/media/promo/TuffTorq/cc%20K46%20AW,%20BA,%20BN%20&%20BT%20MODELS%20IN%20HUSQUVARNA%20CHECKING%20&%20ADDING%20OIL.pdf

I own a Husqvarna YTH2348 w/a K46 transmission. Last year I noticed that after it getting warm, it started sounding like a bad power steering pump and I figured I’d change the fluid, but to no avail. when it heats up (I am mowing a very hilly property) it loses it ability to climb. I was wondering if there’s a pump assembly or something to rebuild/replace? When it’s cold while it’s loud it works fine. after about 20 minutes it won’t climb. level ground it’s okay. any suggestions on what I can do?

Hi just bought a 2020 jd e170 an I have read a bunch about the k46iht an was wondering how durable they are. Mine has the k46be iht any info would appreciated

    • ggraham says:

The K46BE is a premium John Deere transmission with the John Deere oil J20C installed from the factory. That is the quality John Deere Hy-Guard high viscosity hydraulic oil. Do make sure you are not abusing the transmission with hauling heavy objects or towing heavy things with it. Keep the transmission cleaned off as this added debris can be a thermal blanket that does not allow the transmission to cool and the high heat will start to break down any oil faster.

  • kevin mcfarland says:

I have an LTR180 Deere, k46a trans S/N 0037761complete loss of drive. at first struggled on hills not just get a slight movement going back or forward.
On inspection of disassembled trans some slight chipping on spider gears not a lot of metal on magnets. had a paper filter (new replacements I see are screens) Is it possibly just a dirty filter? all plungers in pump and motor seam tight no lateral play noticeable. since apart I was going to replace gears & new screen. pump and motor are fairly pricey if they look fine should I need to replace these assembly’s?
and if there is some wear to these assembly’s would a nice heavier synthetic be advised?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would inspect the other end of the cylinder blocks where they mate up with the center case and also the corresponding faces on the center case. you are looking for scratches or scoring. anything that oil can use as a channel to escape pressure. For filling K46A I would use 10W-30 or J20C the John Deere Hy-Guard high viscosity hydraulic oil.

  • werner reis says:

when I use a lift to raise the front end of my riding mower [k46 transmission] oil drips onto the floor. I know it’s from the transmission. can this be some kind of failure of the vent valve and cap? I had to add a good quart of oil to the trannie when I lowered the machine and it did not move at all.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It is not a failure of the vent valve. The oil will move through the vent which keeps the internal pressures low. However, you should check the oil level by removing the transmission from the tractor and checking the oil level at the sealing cap. Also, since the oil could have seeped out of the hydraulic circuit you should follow the purge procedure to make sure the air is out.

        Hi Graham
When I step on the forward pedal it goes forward but slower than when I step on the reverse pedal which goes reverse but a lot quicker. I know for a fact that the tapered plate which alters direction was fitted correctly as I took photos when I initially started repairs and opened up the box. Any help appreciated
        Regards
        Nigel

          Hello,
So what parts did you replace? If you did not replace the center case (the part held in with 3 bolts) then it could be that the damage to the faces of the center case is showing up in forward first.

          • NIGEL TEALE says:

Hi Graham thanks for your reply I did not replace the centre case held with 3 bolts I will strip down the box and check the condition

Yes, I suspect that there are some scratches or scoring on the faces of that part.

  • Jerome Weber says:

Can I use aw32 hydraulic oil in my transaxle transmission instead of Tuff Torq k46 oil?

    • Gordon says:

Hi there, I have read your negative comments regarding the Tuff Torq transaxle and all the problems and repairs carried out. All I can advise is to try out some new Pullyes! Ypu’d mentioned an oil-change and also that the drivebelt had been replaced. If 100% properly purged (sounds simple but actually isn’t), well then if now power it can in my humble opinion still be a drivebelt issue. How to check this? After running it and noticing the slipping, stop the engine and get off, check directly by touching the drive pulley on the engine and over the drive axle. If these are warm or even hot, well then check by looking at the pulleys exactly where the belt runs. If all shiny well then the slipping is obvious and the heat confirms this. Then and although you’d previously invested in a new drivebelt you still have slip!

  • Bruce says:

I have a leak in my JD L120 K46 transmission coming from the left rear bolt. I discovered a trail of oil up the drive and into the garage with a fairly large amount of oil in the garage. The apparent amount of spill would appear to be more than what is leaking from the bolt. I don’t see any evidence that the oil spilled down from the top of the trans yet it seems impossible that much oil could have come out through that slowly dripping bolt? The bolt was tight. What might cause this situation? What is the likely hood that the internals are damaged and a full rebuild is necessary?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would look for a crack in the case. Did you perhaps hit something? Unless you open up the transmission and inspect the hydraulic parts you will not know for sure about the damage. I would take the transmission out and inspect it really well for issues with the case. If nothing is found the you might want to get some RTV and re-seal the case to make sure it is not the issue in leaking.after filling it with oil and making sure it does not leak I would put it back in and try it.

Cub Cadet Model #13W1A4CA010. Loss of power up hills. Axle seal was bad, leaked all the trans fluid out. replaced the seal, used 15W-40 motorcycle oil to replenish, better power now, but still hesitates. am I better off rebuilding the trans or is there another trick I could try? If recommended to rebuild, where could I purchase the rebuild kit. This Transmission is K46 ETC. Also, the mower had ran for quit some time before the notice of any power loss. at one point, the mower stopped moving forcing me to troubleshoot and repair. Also, when i went in to fill the fluid, had to replace the fan as there were no blades on it (who knows how many hours of operation under this condition). Thinking the trans overheated, blew the axle seal, leaked out the fuid, (because i was stupid and didn’t notice) continued using all up until it totally stopped moving.

There is still a groan/whine when getting up to speed/under load, is this normal? It’s an old unit so won’t be perfect but almost sounds like it’s hurting! Noises don’t bother so if this is normal then I’m fine with it. Thanks again

        • ggraham says:

          Hello,
Whining sounds are indicative of a hydraulic issue. It could be that there is some wear on the center case and the oil pressure that is bleeding off is causing the noise. However, every transmission does sound different which is something I learned on the production floor. If it has power I would continue to run it and see how it fairs.

  • I bought my tuff torq last year. It did good for the first year. this year It started cutting grass foreword and reverse no problem. then It quit, will not go in any direction. what is my problem? I probably put 12 hours on it last year.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It is difficult to troubleshoot something remotely but you should start with all the external things first. Check all the pulleys especially the ones on the engine and the transmission. is there anything that would make them not work or bind thee belt or perhaps keys or splines that are stripped. If that is good then check the linkage. is it bound bent or broken? is the free-wheeling lever in the back left open. If all is well with those two items check the keys in the hubs. If one is broken the transmission will work but all power will be applied to the free spinning axle and the whole thing will not run. if everything external is good then it might be oil in which case you should remove the transmission from the tractor to see what the oil level is.

  • Keith Wilson says:

My tuff torq stopped moving. When I removed the transmission and drained the oil it was milky. Would that cause the transmission to malfunction?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
If the oil was milky then water has gotten into the unit. it could be that the water is making the hydraulic circuit not build pressure as it should. to check this you can put in fresh oil and try the transmission.

  • Alan says:

    Hi guys
My honda 2417 hme mower (2006) is fitted with a Turf Torq unit 7A546024051 with external oil tank and s/n 46F 019174
My problem is grinding noise from the unit so could not find the drain plug but managed to get some of the old oil out and replaced with 30/50 multigrade engine oil as no hydrostatic oil available. The mower still grinds in forward and will not go uphill but not bad on flat ground, in reverse the mower grinds occasionally but climbs uphill no problem. Could you suggest a solution
    Regards
    Nigel Teale

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Grinding noise is indicative of the input shaft/ pulley starting to strip. Check that first but otherwise, it could be the keys on the axles or a gear issue and you would need to open it up to check that.

  • David Boothe says:

Has anyone tried washing out the K46 with gasoline to get more of the old oil and metal residue out?

Is that a good idea or not?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The tightening spec for the center case bolts (M10) is 33~47 ft.lb. Case bolts (M8) are 16~18 ft.lb. I would tend to stay to the lower end of the spec as the case is an aluminum alloy and soft compared to the bolts.

  • Tom Craig says:

  • ron Ehman says:

what is best way to purge a K46DM on a cub cadet?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
You need to put the tractor up on jack stands and with the engine at a low idle you engage the forward pedal and leave it on till you see the wheels start to move strongly and then do the same for reverse. If you have help, a second person can open and close the free-wheeling lever in the back of the tractor to get the air out a little faster.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I would not think changing the oil will help unless the oil is coming from the vent valve. If that is the case then the oil must really be getting hot. the oil is probably spent then so you would want to remove the sealing cap and flip the transmission over to drain the oil and fill it through the same orifice. You would put the oil level about halfway up the magnet that is under the sealing cap and that is a good level.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
That side screw is the cam that sets the neutral for the control lever spring. You check the oil level at the sealing cap under the fan and pully near the front of the transmission. There is a magnet under it and you should have oil about a third of the way up the magnet. On the website https://tufftorq.ordertree.com/ there is a “need help” tab and in there you can find the procedure for changing the axle seals.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,

Hi, My K46 is still jerking for about 5-10 minutes from cold, after which it is fine. If I pre-heat the gearbox to say 85F, it runs fine out of the garage. As the oil has been changed for a 5W-30 does this suggest that there is internal damage? Thank you.

Dear Sirs, I have a 2554 Husqvarna lawn tractor. I had a problem with it when it gets warmed up it doesn”t want to go up hills. I took the transaxle out and disassembled it. the only thing I seen any wear was the springs in the motor and pump. All pistons and cylinders looked very clean with almost play or wear on the chrome of the pistons. I replaced the springs with new ones, put it back together. and it goes forward in reverse. and backs up in forward. Can you tell me what I may have done to cause this? Should I have replaced the pump and motor?

  • Don Morgan says:

Hi, Recently (for the 2nd time) the left rear axle on my Craftsman mower broke at the point it enters the transaxle housing. I mow about 1 acre on flat ground and am wondering if this is a weak point on the axle. This K46 is about 6 years old – the first one was about 3 years old when it broke. The first time the dealer sold me a new transaxle and what I have for numbers are K46BN 7A646084160 468N0046861 – The numbers are coming from my paperwork because the units do not have the sticker on them. I kept the original transaxle and am debating on attempting to just replace the broken axle or replacing the mower. If I opt to repair either or both units is that doable for someone with fairly good mechanical abilities or does it get technical? Also are there repair parts available?
    Thank you for your time……..

  • Jonesy says:

My K46 has started hesitating/slipping and growling when cold, forward or reverse. Cold here is say 5 celcius. After about 10 minutes of use, I get full power no problem. In the summer it’s fine all the time. Belts , pulleys and linkages are good.
I topped up the oil last year and it seemed better, but it seems much worse this winter.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I believe that it is the oil being too thick at startup since it is cold. you could try a 5W-50 synthetic oil and see if that helps.

      • Jonesy says:

Thank you for the suggestion. I ran the mower last night, it was around 20 celcius. The K46 was hesitating/slipping for around 10 minutes until warm. I drained the oil last night and re-filled this morning with 5w-50 100% synthetic. It’s the same from cold, probably around 15 celcius hesitating/slipping a little, but after less than 5 minutes it was running fine. I’d say there is no change in the power available. The K46 has approx 120 hours, and this is the first oil change. I bought the mower at 80 hours.
I’m thinking that maybe this is normal behaviour and I’m over-sensitive to the growling/hesitation. I’m used to a gear-shift!
        Thank you

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
How the transaxle works is that the control lever that is hooked to the pedal moves a part known as a swashplate. That swash plat squeezes pistons in a pump that force oil through an orifice which pressurizes the oil and that oil pressure is what drives the tractor. if you push down real far on the pedal then the swash plate really squeezes the pistons and you get more pressure and go faster. If you only press the pedal halfway, the swashplate will put less oil through the orifice and give you less pressure which will give you less speed. It is perfectly all right to run the pedal wherever you need the speed to be. For instance, in turning you might want to go slower around an obstacle. The transaxle is designed to do this and you are not hurting the it at all.

  • Michael says:

Hi, will any k46 fit a John Deere Lt180

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
According to the John Deere website that tractor had a K46C installed in it. That is the transmission you would need to purchase or get parts for.

  • Grant Simmons says:

Sorry, one more thing. I assume the transaxle is a K46.

  • Grant Simmons says:

I have a Tuff Torq transaxle and the following information is listed on its ID tag:

    TUFF TORQ 7A646084321
    S/N: 46CR0090284
    HOP PN: 426121

I obtained it from an older gentleman who liked working on lawn and garden equipment. For health reasons, he reluctantly had to stop. He had this transaxle, but couldn’t remember what model or brand of equipment it fit. Very clean unit. Drained the oil (only 1/2 quart approximately) but it was pretty clean and contained no metallic particles. Magnet under fill plug had a slight grey film – appeared to be from normal wear and tear. If you could tell me what equipment it would fit and whether or not it appears to be ok based on the oil and magnetic observations, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The K46CR is a Husqvarna transmission. I do not have great tractor information but I do know it was used in these tractors: YT42XLS, YT48XLS, YTH24V54XLS. Other than filling it with oil and trying it you will not know if it is working or not. To be really sure it is good you would need to open it up and inspecting the hydraulic parts. The oil you would want to use is 5W-50 synthetic motor oil. Our Tuff tech oil is best (187Q0899000) but to try to see if it will run any will do.

Will k46 hydrostatica axle work in a L LT155 deere

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I am sorry but a K51 is installed in the LT155 and a K46 does not have the same bolt in pattern nor does it have the same linkage hookups as a K51. So, without lots of modification to the tractor, it is not possible to substitute a K46 for a K51.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The K46CR holds 2.3 litres or 2.4 quarts. The best measure is to fill the transmission until the oil level stabilizes at 1/2 way up the magnet that sits under the sealing cap. That is a good level.

  • Mark lambert says:

    Can you help?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It would be a good Idea to try to change the oil in the unit. That is a great first troubleshooting step to take. You can check all the externals and make sure they are working correctly. If it gets better than it was the oil if not then you know that the hydraulic parts are probably worn.

  • Shannon Heaverin says:

Can I use 15w-50 in the transmission. I have 3 quarts of it already.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Though it is easy to think other oil types will work in replacement of the recommended oil, our oil is actually a very special blend designed to be used in Tuff Torq transmissions. Even the 10W-30 we have is not normal motor oil. these are specially blended to be used in these transmissions. So though you can use whatever you would like the recommended oil, as I stated before, is designed to be in the transmission.

  • Justin says:

Sorry one more question…. The sticker on my JD D160 K46 says 7A646084121. Can you tell me the oil capacity?

  • Justin says:

How can you “purge the air” with the transaxle on the bench? I’ve read the procedure to do it with the transaxle installed, but on a John Deere D160, I’d then have to pull it back out to top off the oil since there is no access to the top of the transaxle.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Purging air on the bench does not get the build-up of RPMs to make the transaxle run strongly. Typically a drill will not get you the power you need to do this quickly. It is best to install the transmission back into the tractor and purge it up on jack stands. Filling the typical K46 with oil halfway up the magnet is a good level for the oil to be at pre-air purge.

  • Benjamin R says:

    • ggraham says:

      Thank you for your inquiry,
Capacity is approximately 2.4 quarts. I am including an image of where the oil level should be.

  • Glenn MacNeil says:

We have a Cub Cadet ride on the mower will work for awhile then starts slowing down going up hill. Oil was never changed in it. Can it be low on oil or has the oil broken down so badly it has ruined the transmission? There is 220 hrs on the machine but we cut hilly terrain . Thanks Glenn.

  • Eddie Lambert says:

Pulled transmission apart changed oil put back together/ now mower goes forward on reverse pedal and forward on reverse pedal, what hav we done wrong.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
You have installed the wedge-shaped motor housing upside down. Flip it around 180 degrees and it will fix the issue. So if the wide side is towards you put it down so that the thin side is towards you. Or vice versa.

  • Jack Mendelsohn says:

I have been readng all of the Q & A and will be draining the trasmission and changing the oil and am considering adding Lucas transmission additve. I would appreciate your input on this.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Tuff Torq has not done any testing on the additive you mentioned. Therefore, I cannot give advice on whether you could use it or the safety or efficacy of the additive. You can add it if you would like but I cannot give advice to do it.

  • AR Warren says:

Husqvarna YTH24K48 I understand it uses a K46BT transaxle. When stepping on peddle for forward motion there is a long delay, tractor starts to move slowly until getting to normal speed. If stopped it restarts just as slowly. In reverse no dely at all. Engine runs fine, rpms remain constant. 144 hrs on tractor about 5 years old

  • Stephen says:

Hello I have a K46A transaxle and I took it off the unit as it would run for 20 minutes and then stop moving. I let it rest for 20 minutes after the oil cooled down and then the unit would run for another 20 minutes. I just saw a video that showed how to drain the oil from it and noticed that there was hardly any oil in the unit, and whatever I was adding thru the air vent would come out after it heated up. Could it just be that I need to add oil to the unit and put it back together instead of rebuilding it? The unit does not whine or make noises when it moves but after 20 minutes it stops. Thanks for your advice!

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
the best first step is changing the oil in the transmission. Getting fresh viscosity in the unit will help determine if it was just the oil or there are some other issues. Use a 5w-50 synthetic, our tuff Tech oil is best but you can try what you can find. Most K46’s hold 2.4 quarts. As always if you have other questions you can contact the Service Department at 866.572.3441 or email at salessrvc@tufftorq.com.

  • Bobby shepherd says:

1870 Christopher Trace Is the center section on a John Deere what makes in go in forward and reverse ?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
The control lever makes the transmission go forward and back with the swash plate squeezing the pistons of the pump cylinder block. The motor housing determines if the control lever going towards the front of the transmission makes the transmission go forward or backwards.

  • Justin says:

    Will 20w50 work in a k46

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I do not have any testing data on that weight of oil. We only test with the oil that is installed in the unit or our recommended oil. You can try using anything but officially I cannot say if it will work or not. Of course, as a recommendation, the superior oil to use would be our premium Tuff tech oil part number 187Q0899000 and it is $28.50 for a 3 liter bottle.

  • D. Konze says:

    Hi,
I have a K46BE in my JD L130. I changed the filter and oil using Tuff Tech recommended oil. The trans drive belt started to slip badly. I replaced the belt and much improvement. But, it still slips going up a grade, even with a helper spring on the tensioner. Do I need to go to a lighter weight oil? I read that JD uses 30 weight.

  • GARY MCINTYRE says:

I HAVE A TUFF TORQ K46DM HAS RED FLUID LEAKING FROM BOTH AXELS. JUST WONDERING WHAT TYPE OF FLUID SHOULD BE IN THIS? This tractor is 2015 with 90 hours on it… not sure if I should change the seals or the fluid?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
There should not be “red” liquid leaking from the transmission. We install 10W-30 in the K46DM. Unless someone changed the fluid it should be a motor oil in the unit.

  • Rexford Parrish says:

What about the second black cap that is not under the cooling fan assembly. Do I drain that as well and what type and how much fluid goes back in the unit?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
That is the vent valve and when you drain the oil it will also drain the chamber (gear chamber) under that cap. Filling at the sealing cap under fan and pulley stack up will also fill the gear chamber. So the same oil goes in both chambers.

  • Ken Smith says:

Thank you, ggraham. I will save this information. My searches today suggest going stronger may be more important than just pursuing a locking option.
I found a reference to updating the K46 with K57 internals. Do you have any knowledge of this?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
It is unfortunate but we no longer offer that as a service. The Engineer who kept up with all the parts changes has retired and no one has taken up that mantle.

  • Ken Smith says:

I forgot to add the K62 is available on this tractor as an option with the large deck. The linkage could possibly be sourced from Cub Cadet.
    Thanks.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
I think that would be a question for Cub Cadet. Since we do not see the transmissions in the tractors it is hard to say what would work.

  • Ken Smith says:

Greetings. My 2018 Cub Cadet XT2 came with a K46 transmission. Due to the terrain on my property I am compelled to use tire chains even in good weather. Is there a transmission (K 62 perhaps?) with a locker option that I can swap in easily?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
There is not an easy swap between transmissions due to the fact that these transmissions are built for the specific tractors that they are installed in. That being said there is a company in Washington, not affiliated with Tuff Torq that has a K66 upgrade. His contact information is below.

My LTX1045 is leaking oil from the vent valve. I have added oil to the transmission several times and it continues to lead from the vent valve. I do have 125 hrs on it. How do I eliminate this problem?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
If oil is coming out of the vent valve then the transmission must be experiencing some rather rough treatment to make the oil heat up and expand that much that it is leaking from the vent valve. You might want to check to see if the fan is intact. Otherwise, I would change the oil and see if that helps.

hola tengo una husqvarna con k46 y el problema en esta es que después de 20 minutos de trabajo pierde toda la fuerza y ya cambie el aceite y el problema persiste 🙁 ¿que es lo que estara pasando?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello Mr Briceno,
It sounds like there could be wear on the internal hydraulic parts. The oil is using this to escape pressure especially after it warms up and thins out. After checking everything externally like the pulleys and the linkage your best option would be to rebuild the hydraulic system or replace the transmission. You can order parts right off of the website: https://tufftorq.ordertree.com/. And as always you can call the helpful service techs in the Service Department at 866.572.3441.

I have a 2007 Craftsman MTS 5500 tractor with a K46 transmission. The number on the axle appears to be 7A646084161 SN#468N806013. The transmission quit working while vaccuming leaves and going up a small grade. It has some power going on level ground but will not climb a hill. The case is clean as there are no signs of oil leaking. What should I be looking for?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello Mr DuBan,
It sounds like you need an oil change in your transmission to be sure of what you are dealing with. It can make the transmission run again but it is not a guarantee to fix the issue. But it is a great first step in finding the problem. When removing the transmission from the tractor you want to pay particular attention to the linkage, fan, and all the pulleys on the tractor. By checking these external issues you are making sure that they get eliminated from the list of possible issues. If all is well with the externals, change the oil and see if it helps. If it does, Great, then you had an issue with oil viscosity. If it does not get better or only slightly then you have wear on the internal hydraulic parts that the oil cannot make up for and a repair kit is what you need to replace the worn parts to get your transmission running like new again. You can always contact the service departments friendly service techs at 866.572.3441 or email at salessrvc@tufftorq.com.

  • Tyesen Robbins says:

How much fluid does the K46 tranny hold?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello Mr Robbins,
Most K46s hold 2.4 Quarts, however, there are a few that only hold 2 Quarts. It depends on whether or not the K46 in question has an external reservoir or an internal one. The internal reservoir units hold more oil.the rule of thumb is that the sealing cap with the magnet underneath of it is the easiest thing to look at for oil level. Keep the oil level at 1/3 to 1/2 up the magnet and that will be a good level for the transmission. And as always, if you have more questions you can contact the helpful techs in the service department by phone or email at salessrvc@tufftorq.com or 866.572.3441.

  • do you offer a k46 with drain plugs?for a deere L120

    • ggraham says:

      Hello,
Adding drain bolts to K46s that do not have them can be a problem waiting to happen and in reality not save you much time at all. The problem is having to pull off the lower case off to drill and tap for the drain bolt holes and now you have introduced a new way for the transmission to leak oil. Time is not really saved due to the fact you would have to still have to remove the transmission from the tractor to put the oil in the unit. We try to talk owners out of doing it for those reasons. However, you can always contact the friendly techs in the Tuff Torq Service Department by Phone: 866.572.3441 and Email:salessrvc@tufftoq.com if you have any further questions or for more clarity.

    Hi Guys,
I have an L110 John Deere and had a leaking seal on the input shaft . I removed the trans-axle and brought it to my local dealer for replacement. After installing it there is no grunt in the machine. It cannot even climb a small hill. I removed it again and found the oil level a bit low so I topped it up with about a cup of suitable oil. Could this be the problem, ie. low oil? If I need to rebuild the pump assembly/motor can you supply a rebuild kit? I am in Australia and find the John Deere people here only want to sell a complete trans-axle.

  • DANIEL MCCALLUM says:

Good evening. I own a John Deere L130 lawn tractor. Manufactured date 05/12. It doesn’t move at all. Raised rear wheels off ground tires do turn slowly, but I can stop simply by touching wheel. I understand their maybe a problem with K46 trans. What is my best option for the money to repair or replace.

    • ggraham says:

      Hello Mr. McCallum,
You should check all the external things first. Making sure the control lever is being pushed and pulled through the whole arc that it can travel. Also, you should check the input shaft and the pulley making sure that the pulley is turning the input shaft. After that, you should check all the pulleys from the engine on to make sure you do not have a problem that way. If those things are all good then you might want to open the transmission and check the machined faces of the center case. Paying particular attention to the areas between the ports. that is where the oil can escape and not hold pressure and that loss of pressure is the reason you could be experiencing low power. As always, you can call the service department to talk to the friendly techs at 866.572.3441 and see if they can help troubleshoot your issue.

Our Transmissions are tested at the end of the assembly line to ensure that they are meeting certain standards. So your transmission that is coming is purged, tested, and ready to drop in your tractor.

I just inherited an 02 John Deere LTR 180 with a tuff torq K46 transaxle. Everything is working fine but there is a little humming noise when I engage the transaxle. The article above seems to contradict itself in regards to an oil change. First paragraph says “Normally the Strider™ transaxle (K46), that is featured in many tractor & rider models, does not require any servicing for the life of the vehicle.” Then “In heavy usage applications oil changing is recommended after the 1st 50 hours of operation and every 200 hours, thereafter.” What is “heavy usage?” and should I take the transaxle out and change the fluid? Thank you so much!

I have a 11 yr. old, 400 hrs. K46 in John Deere LT160, should I remove it and change fluid and was told to use 5w50 synthetic motor oil if I do !!

what type oil for al,winter ,summerl year

    • ggraham says:

      Hello Mr. French,
Yes, changing the oil is a good idea. The oil in the transmission will breakdown over time and keeping fresh oil in the transmission will definitely help it run. We do recommend 5W-50 synthetic oil for your change and have an excellent blend that will help the unit run longer. You can always contact the helpful techs at the Service Department if you have any further questions.

Is there an upgrade kit for the k46 transaxle? I plan on buying a Cub Cadet LT with a 42″ wide mower deck. I plan on using it to mow and pull a 15gal. trailer type sprayer. Will the K46 ever need servicing if I use it as stated? If there is an upgrade kit, what does it consist of and what is the cost?

    • ggraham says:

      Hello, Mr. Elliott,
I am sorry but we do not have upgrade kits. If you need to talk with a service rep, however, you can call at 866.572.3441

I own the John Deere L-120 and the transmission has failed. Imagine that? Any design that requires you to have to remove the transmission to replace the fluid is pure BS. The John Deere Manual says, “The transmission is a sealed unit that requires no maintenance” To add insult to injury they want to charge me more for a replacement than the mower is worth, knowing it won’t last either? Last John Deere anything I will ever own.

I am having problems with my John Deere L130 tractor transmission slipping. Belt and pulleys are new. My tractor is a 2004 and is in very good condition. If I remove the transmission and change the oil can I drain most of the old oil from the top plug. I have observed someone trying to suck out the oil but he only got about a pint out. I may end up rebuilding or replacing the transmission but I would like to try oil first . If I have to replace the transmission should I upgrade to a k66 or another k46. If I have to replace the transmission I will contact you for what transmission will fit my tractor.

    • Hello Mr. Conley. Thanks for your message. While I am happy to help any way I can, you have several questions here that would be best answers by one of our service professionals. You can reach them at salessrvc@tufftorq.com or toll-free at (866) 572-3441. They can give you recommendations on how to properly do an effective oil change and/or what would be best to check in the unit to see if repair or replacement is recommended. I hope this is helpful. Please let us know if you need anything further. Have a great day!

          Hello,
I would need a little more information to help you. I need the serial number of the pump to know which one it is so I can get you the information on oil.
